The Packet is a science fiction novella set aboard a packet steamer carrying post-WWI emigrants from Scotland to the New World. The story follows the fortunes of Charlie Fintry, whose lack of employment opportunities and recent loss of wife and child to the Spanish Flu outbreak has left him looking for something to live for. As the seemingly interminable voyage rolls on, enduring hazardous weather, fractious arguments among the passengers and wanton cruelty meted out by the crew, he begins to doubt that even the land of opportunity will have anything to offer him.
But all is not as it seems…
The Packet was originally published in serial form in issues 11, 12 and 13 of ParSec Magazine, and is now published for the first time by NewCon Press in ebook, paperback and signed, special edition hardback formats.
