Nice piece in the Scotsman noting that it’s 150 years since physicist, James Clerk Maxwell took the world’s first colour photograph. Maxwell was a hero of mine during my student days for being the guy that came up with the equations that neatly explain how electric and magnetic fields work. Like PJ Moore, noted in the article, I first learned about Maxwell’s work studying for my Electronics Engineering degree. And he was one of the first physicists that made me think: how the hell did he come up with that? That complete leap of intuition. How amazing is that?
Newton and gravity. Einstein and relativity. Maxwell and electromagnetism. No matter how much science fiction I read, the sensawunda never quite compares with the real thing.
