This time last year I made a sort of resolution to do one simple thing: to read more for enjoyment. Mostly I carried it through and I read a lot of good books and stories, and a few poor ones too. Towards the end of the year, though, I got sidetracked by reading a few unpublished novels, which is enjoyable too, but in a different way.
So, it was nice, come December, to be able to get back on track with Kim Lakin-Smith’s Cyber Circus (Newcon Press). Especially as the book turned out to be one of the most original and imaginative fantasy adventures I’ve read in ages. With a strange, blighted future setting and a literal cast of oddball characters (including a glow-in-the-dark burlesque dancer, a cyborg soldier, and a living circus), it’s a proper romp with a side of dark romance. Great way to end the year.
