Yeah, so it’s good to have goals. Especially at this time of the year, and I’m going to give mine to you in two parts. Part 1 is about reading.
This time last year I set myself the goal of reading more. It was a good thing to do because it allowed me to rediscover the fun of reading, something I’d lost over the years as I turned from a story-hungry pleasure reader into an overly analytical writer type.
This year’s goal is to carry the hell on with that. I’m aiming for 1-2 novels a month, the usual alternate issues of Interzone and Black Static, and whatever else I can fit in.
One additional, and very special piece of reading matter I’m going to be dipping into over the coming months is Ann & Jeff Vandermeer‘s absolutely magnificent The Weird; a colossal compendium of the very best dark, strange and, yes, weird stories ever published. It covers pretty much the entire history of the genre, and in addition to native English speaking writers also features work by a substantial number of international hands, several published in English for the first time. The Weird is absolutely essential for fans of fantasy, horror, magic realism and everything in between, and I’m SO looking forward to making it part of my reading enjoyment in the coming year.
In fact, I’m going to start tonight!
