Last week I finished reading a new novella, This Is How You Lose The Time War, by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone.
Part Spy-vs-Spy, part epistolary love story, part time-travel tale, it’s a book that is sure to feature in the discussions when next year’s award season comes around. It’s a pacy read, but a poetic one too replete with linguistic fireworks as the story’s time-traveling adversaries correspond with each other via a series of ultimate dead drops. It’s the kind of story that can only be told with the tools science fiction, and it is executed exceedingly well by two of the genre’s very best.
If this sounds like the sort of thing you’d be into, Amal El-Mohtar has a couple of book shop events coming up in August:
- August 20th, 5.30pm, she’ll be signing the book at Forbidden Planet in London
- August 29th, 7.00pm, she’ll be here in Glasgow at Waterstones, Argyle St, discussing the book with Hal Duncan
Highly recommended.
