BSFA award 2024 shortlist

You don’t get many days like last Thursday. I mean, it was February 29th, so obviously… but, aside from that, it was the official release day for Charlie Says. And it was the day that Andrew Wilson and I finalised the Table of Contents for our Nova Scotia 2 anthology, which we are very excited about (more on that very soon).

And then on top of all that, I discovered that A Little Seasoning, my decidedly unpalatable little gastromantacy (free to read over on IZ Digital, but be warned, it’s pretty icky), has been voted onto the shortlist for this year’s British Science Fiction Association award for short fiction. Which just blew my mind.

I can only say an enormous thank you to Gareth Jelley of Interzone for publishing the story and everyone that voted for it, and best of luck to the other wonderful nominees. This is my second year in a row on this particular shortlist, and my third in total. It’s lovely to know that folk continue to enjoy my stuff.

Talking of which. Did I mention that Charlie Says is officially out now? Eager early readers are continuing to say very nice things about it. I’m beginning to think this urban folk horror vibe has got legs.

Taaaalking of which. I’m now starting to pull together the ideas and materials for my Spring Scares workshop. My session, Blood in the Bricks and Neon Rites: Exploring Folk Horror in the Urban Environment, is on April 9th but there are five other brilliant sessions before that, starting with Steve Toase’s Paint, Performance and Pain: Art in Horror Short Fiction this coming Tuesday, March 5th.

And last but not least Lauren McMenemy of the British Fantasy Society very kindly invited me to do a wee interview in their Meet The Members series. If you want to read a bit more about me and my writing, have a gander.
